Mechanical Engineers' Handbook, Third Edition, Four Volume Set provides a single source for all critical information needed by mechanical engineers in the diverse industries and job functions they find themselves. No single engineer can be a specialist in all areas that they are called on to work and the handbook provides a quick guide to specialized areas so that the engineer can know the basics and where to go for further reading.
The Mechanical Engineering Handbook provides extensive coverage on the fundamental topics and emerging issues involved in mechanical engineering, from the structure of solids to virtual reality. Each chapter has a detailed table of contents, most contain graphs, figures, references, and a bibliography to aid the reader's comprehension. Several chapters in this handbook were found to be particularly engaging: "What the Law Requires of an Engineer" provides examples and case studies to clarify topics such as hazard analysis; and, "Electronic Information Resources: Your On-line Bookshelf," discusses why tapping into technical information can help engineers avoid mistakes. The final section of the handbook, "Management, Finance, Quality, Law, and Research," strays from the traditional ideas of a professional desk reference. It deals with a variety of topics not dealt with in similar works. For example, the chapter "Managing People" explains motivation and barriers to team performance.

While covering the basic principles of mechanics in an example-driven format, this innovative book emphasizes critical thinking by presenting the reader with engineering situations. Compelling photorealistic art, and a robust photograph program helps readers to connect visually to the topics discussed. Features strong coverage of FBDs and important ABET topics.Ā For professionals in mechanical, civil, aeronautical, or engineering mechanics fields.
I have taught dynamics at the university level, and have used several different dynamics books. This one is clear and well-written, but oversimplified, even for a one-semester undergraduate course. The selection of problems is poor.

However, it is not the best source book for mechanical design. (This refers to the seventh edition) As a design engineer, I find it most useful when finding information on CTE's and other thermal properties, and also to get a good basic understanding of a class of materials. For straight forward stress analysis, resources like MIL-HDBK-5 and the ASM References often prove more useful. If you are doing a lot of thermal analysis, or are often looking to apply exotic materials to design problems, you'll find yourself reaching for Smithells on a regular basis.

Filled with over 225 boiler/HRSG operation and design problems, this book covers steam generators and related systems used in process plants, refineries, chemical plants, electrical utilities, and other industrial settings. Emphasizing the thermal engineering aspects, the author provides information on the design and performance of steam generators and heat recovery boilers. He helps those involved in development understand which questions to ask when selecting a steam generator for their project. The book includes many easy to use calculations and effectively explains the theory behind the design and performance of all types of boilers, superheaters and economizers including specialty boilers.
It's not at all clear who this book is written for. It's probably not very useful to those not familiar with the specialized jargon of the boiler industry. It's certainly of no value to anyone outside the U.S., where modern units are used. The treatments of thermodynamic cycles demonstrate a lack of deep understanding and even interest. Perhaps the best that can be said for it is that the numerous solved problems on heat transfer may be of value to engineers needing similar problems solved in English units, but the treatments may not be easy to apply to slightly different situations. It's really time to just start boycotting books and articles that are not in SI units. -F. David Doty, PhD.

As a novice with an interest in engineering I find the book challenging, albeit a little difficult. This is not due to the book, but to my lack of knowledge, of which I am sure I will eventually learn a great deal in time.

Structural Analysis of Polymeric Composite Materials studies the mechanics of composite materials and structures and combines classical lamination theory with macromechanic failure principles for prediction and optimization of composite structural performance. This reference addresses topics such as high-strength fibers, commercially-available compounds, and the behavior of anisotropic, orthotropic, and transversely isotropic materials and structures subjected to complex loading. It provides a wide variety of numerical analyses and examples throughout each chapter and details the use of easily-accessible computer programs for solutions to problems presented in the text.
I am taking a graduate course in composite structures. Our textbook, written by the professor, includes almost no examples and the text struggles to tie the mathematical concepts together in a practical way. In preparation for my exam, I utilized this book by Tuttle. In contrast to our assigned text, it seems to flow in a much more intuitive way. There are numerous example problems which help clarify your understanding of the concepts. I would recommend this book as a reference for professionals and as a supplement to introductory composites coursework.
